Application for Reweight of Formative Assessment Contribution (up to NQF Level 7 only)
In terms of The IIE’s Assessment Strategy and Policy (IIE009 – Section10.5, 12.1 and 12.3) any student who wishes to have the contribution of a formative assessment (only up to NQF Level 7 programmes) reweighted can submit an application provided that:
Your application is submitted to the Student Hub within five working days of the test or other formative deadline.
Any refused application for an assessment exception will automatically be treated as a reweighting
application and an automatic reweighting will be given for a formative assessment, provided you qualify for a reweighting. If you do not qualify for a reweighting, a mark of 0% is entered. In the case of summative assessments, a mark of 0% is entered.
Reweighting means that the contribution of each formative assessment, other than ICE, to the CASS mark for that module or subject is proportionally reweighted to cater for the test not written or the assignment not submitted. Thus, the weighting of the remaining formatives, relative to each other, does not alter although the relative contribution of each assessment to the overall mark increases.
You do not do not need to provide supporting documentation with your reweighting application other than the application form as the onus is on you to manage how you use this concession.
Reweighting applications, if submitted on time, will only be approved if:
- There have been no other reweighting applications for this module; or
- This is a module in which reweighting is permitted; or
- The student has not already reweighted two of the formative assessments for that academic year.
a) If your application is not approved or not made on time, a mark of 0% is entered for the
b) As ICE activities cannot be reweighted, a mark of 0% for that activity is entered if it is an ICE activity contributing to the ICE mark.
c) Where the formative assessment is part of the work that will eventually be submitted as a portfolio of evidence, the contribution of that part of the work to the formative result (CASS) can be reweighted BUT the summative portfolio must still be complete. This means that work not submitted and reweighted as part of the formative must still be completed as part of a summative portfolio or the contribution to the summative be entered at 0%.
d) If an originality report is not submitted with your original submission it will automatically be treated as a reweighting application for those modules in which reweighting is possible subject to all the normal reweighting provisions. If you have already used all three reweighting opportunities a mark of 0% is entered.
e) If the submission is the only formative other than ICE, reweighting is not possible and in that case if the report is not submitted with the original submission but is submitted within 24 hours of the deadline the work will be marked but will be capped at 50%. If no originality report is submitted within the 24 hours, a mark of 0% will be entered for the assessment.
f) Assignments not submitted on time will be handled in terms of the exceptions/concessions and reweighting procedures.
g) If your submission is late for a module in which reweighting is not possible and you submit the work by no later than the following working day (17:00 full-time students, part-time students 19:00 weekdays/ 9:00 on a Saturday), the work will be marked but a mark cap of 50% is applied. This can be done once per academic year.
h) Should you already used all their opportunities for reweighting in a modules in which reweighting is possible and this late submission is for a module in which reweighting would have been possible and you do not qualify for any of the other general assessment concessions outlined in this Policy (IIE009 - Section 10.2), a mark of 0% will be entered.
i) For Short Learning Programmes (SLPs), there are no opportunities to reweight assessments.
j) Reweighting is NOT POSSIBLE under the following circumstances- in these cases the subminimum requirements for CASS for examination entry is waived:
- Reweighting is not permitted for the one formative assessment (other than ICE) in modules that only
have one formative other than ICE;
- Reweighting of ICE is NOT permitted.
- Reweighting of Brand Challenges are not permitted
Reweight opportunities are limited and you are advised to ensure that you only
Invoke these for unavoidable circumstances as once they have been used, no further opportunities will be provided.
According to The IIE's Assessment Strategy and Policy (IIE009- Section 10.8), you may apply for a replacement assessment if the sitting of an assessment written under examination conditions is scheduled on a religious holiday OTHER than a Christian religious day or on the following additional religious holidays:
|Jewish||Pesach (Passover)||Shavuot (Feast of Weeks)|
|||Rosh Hashanah (New Year)||Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)|
|Islamic||Eid al-Fitr ||Eid al-Adha|
You must submit an application for a replacement summative assessment to Student Hub at least 10 working days before the religious holiday.
This concession will be to write your assessment in the next available sitting.
